Worked examples

A Series EE bond issued May 1992

Stopped earning interest at final maturity in (30 years from issue). During its original 12-year maturity period it carried a guaranteed rate of 6% per year (TreasuryDirect: EE bonds 1980–1995). It is still redeemable at full value, and its interest became reportable for federal income tax in 2022 even if it was not cashed.

A Series I bond issued January 1999

Still earning interest. Its fixed rate is 3.30%, and for the 6-month rate window that began it earns 6.70% annualized; its next rate takes effect in . It stops earning at final maturity in — 30 years from issue (TreasuryDirect: I bonds).

A Series E bond issued March 1978

Stopped earning interest in — E bonds issued December 1965 through June 1980 earned interest for 30 years (TreasuryDirect: historical bonds). It is still redeemable: banks that cash savings bonds can pay it, or it can be mailed to Treasury with FS Form 1522. A bond dated after June 1980 that looks like an E bond is Series EE.
